Quick takeaway: Walk a bit after every meal. That's the only health tip I can give.

In February this year I walked 81,744 steps. Not in a day, the whole month. It sounds like a respectable number until it's divided by 28, which comes to about 2,900 a day. Even that flatters me, because a few unusually busy days carried the total. Take those out, and what remains, ladies and gentlemen, is called a sedentary life. My watch had a small daily target back then. I met it once in 28 days. I was 39, around 97 kilograms, and stairs, errands, saying yes to things, all of it cost more than it should have. I didn't think of myself as unwell. I thought of myself as busy. The un-dramatic start Nothing cinematic happened. Somewhere in the middle of March I started walking after meals. My watch says the first completed activity rings show up around the 12th. There was no gym membership and no programme, and nobody took a before-photo in grim resolve. A walk, after eating, most days. The daily step target on my watch at the time was 5,900\. It was small on purpose. Small enough that skipping it felt sillier than doing it. March split down the middle. The first eleven days look like February, then the rings start closing, and the month ended at 191,415 steps with the target met 12 days out of 31\. Still failing most days, just failing less. Then April raised the stakes, and it wasn't me who raised them. My best friend Anusha decided, announced really, that we were all doing a 10,000 steps a day challenge. The streak since has stayed unbroken, minus a handful of days I can count on my fingers. Along the way the target stopped being the ceiling. Ten thousand was the floor, and the average now runs around 20,000, double everything this started as. She is a major reason this held. By early May I was about fifty days in, and not one of those days had required a decision. The first one had. The rest followed it. The walk The routine, if something this small can be called one: after every meal, I walk. A couple of thousand steps, sometimes more. Around the villa complex, inside the house when it rains, on the spot if it comes to that. It asked for nothing. No gear, no route, no minimum pace, and no deciding when, because it was attached to something that already happened three times a day. The meal ends, the walk starts. The habit borrowed its schedule from my stomach. I wasn't counting anything in March, and the walk was never about calories. It was a default being installed while the stakes were low, something for everything later to stand on. Motivation didn't do this I would like to report that I found willpower in a drawer somewhere. I didn't. Motivation fluctuates, mine always had, and every previous attempt ran on it and ended when it did. I have the receipt: a properly active stretch in mid-2025, 283,113 steps in a month, that faded to nothing within the year. What changed this time was the friction, and the company. The walking began giving energy back instead of only costing it. And the challenge meant the walk was no longer a private arrangement I could renegotiate on a bad day, because someone I don't like disappointing was counting the same streak. I didn't become a disciplined person. Somewhere in April the loop just reversed. Moving made moving easier, which made me want to move, which made everything easier still. The ladder February: 81,744 steps, the target met once in 28 days. March: 191,415, met 12 of 31\. April: 339,601, met 27 of 30\. Nothing stands between those three months except a walk after meals and a challenge I couldn't drop without someone noticing. You grow, you don't spawn. Next: what the scale made of it.
